Saturday January 23rd, 2016. Home rugby match against Greenwich. I got up, ate breakfast, dressed up, grabbed my kit and headed off to Shooters Hill (for those of you who don't know, the home of all good rugby http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/shootershill). I might be slightly exaggerating there.
I was quite an active person, not to say that I was in the running for Mr Olympia any time before my accident, I was going to the gym 3 or 4 times a week. Between that and running out weekly for 'Shoots' at inside centre, I was enjoying an active lifestyle and my job as a field sales person also kept my iPhone steps up.
About 15 minutes into the second half I was defending a move by Greenwich and during an attempted tackle on their winger, I clattered my shin off his knee. Wham. After the game the spectators told me they heard the impact from the sideline. I went to the floor and the pain came almost straight away. I shouted over for the game to be stopped which it eventually was and my team mates crowded around me. In came the usual array of pseudo doctors and I was being asked question like "can you get up?" and "can you wiggle your toes?" They concluded that it wasn't broken and I was hauled off the field and my leg propped on a tackle pad.
I watched the rest of the match from the sideline (we lost) and afterwards I got up with help of a couple of guys and shook hands with the opposition. I even walked through the tunnel at the end of the match, something I later got told was very stupid. What can you do? After I got back to the changing rooms I decided that a trip to hospital was probably in order so I got a lift to QE Hospital in Shooters Hill.
After a nice long wait with my best friend Ed, who was also playing that day, and my girlfriend Roisin, I was told that I had a transverse fracture to the middle of my Tibia.
This picture doesn't really show the full extent of the break, it was a lot worse in HD. I am lucky that the bones did not move or 'displace' as they call it which meant that I avoided surgery but I still had to spend two nights in hospital watching copious amounts of Narcos on Netflix and not sleeping much.
The outcome of all this is pretty simple. 3 months in a cast, no walking for around 2, and no return to sports for probably about a year.
I'm starting this blog a little late - it's actually been 3 weeks since the break. I'll write a couple of retrospective pieces to catch you up and from there on I'm going to keep you with me every step of the way as I fix my leg and adjust to this life changing experience.
