Losing my marbles one by one

Weeks 2 and 3 were by far the most difficult. I found that because my ability to exercise effectively had been taken away, with it went my motivation to keep up a healthy lifestyle in general. I was eating pretty badly and smoking the odd cigarette (I am a reformed ex-smoker). Anybody who knows a little about Osteopathy will know that diet and avoiding things like smoking have a big impact on bone healing so this was not a good thing. My state of mind was getting worse, as was the pain my lower back from lying down so much.

People kept on saying to me "you should enjoy the rest" but all I wanted to do was get up and about and get on with my life, most of all my job. I had an appointment set for the 12th of February for a check up so until this point, I didn't even know for sure if  I needed an operation or not.

It was also at this point that my sleeping went to absolute shit. I was getting to sleep at around 3/4am and then waking up at 10am but being so shot to pieces I could barely think straight.

Things were getting really bad and I was arguing with Roisin most evenings because the stress was mounting on her too. I didn't expect it to effect our relationship quite as much as it has; in some ways it has brought us closer, but at times it really drove a wedge between us.

All I can say is thank goodness for the Six Nations championship, even though it was a bitter sweet thing to be watching as I won't be able to play competitive rugby for at least a year, probably 18 months.

The 12th of Feb rolled around and off I went back to QE Hospital for my first check up. The arbitrary hospital wait ensued and I had my cast replaced with a sexy red number, just in time for Valentine's day. Game on.

The reason I have started this blog now is because this is when things get interesting. With this lighter, fibreglass cast I can start to get back to being me. I can take trips into my office, see my colleagues, go to the pub (first thing I did) and even start to exercise again as long as it doesn't impact on my leg.

My main priorities at the moment are: 1. Sorting my sleep, I am posting this at 1.30 Monday morning so that's definitely something I need to work on. Please leave me a comment if you have any tips on sleeping comfortably with a full leg cast. 2. Eating better. 3. Getting into the office and getting stuck into my work again.

All the while I will be recording my return to a two legged person, hopefully to fitness and all the other bits and pieces in my life. I hope you enjoy coming with me.

Speak to you all later.

 Ben :)
